Country musician, Joey James was born in Salem, OR and raised on a dairy farm in small town Scio, OR, a town of 600 people. Second to the oldest of five children, Joey is extremely close to his mom and credits her as ‘super woman’ raising him and his siblings bound to a wheelchair since his birth from a single car accident.
Music has always been a part of his life. Joey adds, “I remember my grandpa being an Elvis impersonator! My mom played all of the soft rock hits from the 80s like Heart, Richard Marx and Michael Bolton which is where I fell in love with ballads. The first country artist I heard and loved was Doug Stone.” Joey won a singing competition while in service and the rest they say, is history.
His music can be described as a kick-back sound of 90s country feel, with a sprinkle of rock, rounded out with heart-felt ballads. He has shared the stage with Diamond Rio, Miranda Lambert, William Michael Morgan, Lee Brice, Darryl Worley and others. His influences are Garth Brooks, Luke Combs, Riley Green and singer/songwriters James Taylor and Eric Clapton for their writing contribution.
Not only is Joey a performer, but he is an avid songwriter. “I love to write about my life experiences and I am passionate about what I write”, adds Joey. “When I was 16 I was writing a lot of poetry. During this time, I wrote my first song called “Field of Corn” and had to write the words on a paper plate because I was at the barn and that is all I had to write on at the time.”
“Music heals and moves the soul and that is why I love it. It is therapy for me,” Joey shares. “I love watching my friends and fans moved by my words I am singing. I have met some of the most wonderful people through the years and I look forward to meeting many more.”
Joey served in the US Navy for 4 years and is a Navy Veteran from Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is passionate about helping fellow military veterans and active service members in need. He has been involved in several nonprofits including David’s Chair, Kill 22, TX Homeless Vets among others. Joey loves to work with nonprofits. “I am just a kid from the sticks that enjoys helping others. I love to change lives of those less fortunate. I have lived the Mac and cheese life and I know what it means to struggle,” Joey says. “I am very blessed to be able to do what I do through music.”
Another special lady in his life is his beloved service dog Mia who has been a part of his life for 10 years serving to help with his epilepsy and PTSD. Joey shares, “I owe my life to Mia. She has not only saved my life but others as well. She goes everywhere I go making new friends all over the country and she is right by my side at all of my shows. I have never had a more faithful, loving friend.”
He has one daughter, Massae’ and she is 20 years old. He currently resides in Nashville, TN.
